Washi Tape Guide for Your Sewing Machine
How I took my sewing to the next level with this simple and free advice
Being new to sewing I’ve started looking up some tips and tricks to help me improve. There is a LOT to learn with this new hobby. I’m happy to say that I’m getting better with every thing that I sew…which is a lot considering how many masks and baby bibs I’ve sewn recently. One of the best tricks that I’ve learned recently is using a washi tape guide for your sewing machine.
If you craft, you know what washi tape is. If you don’t, then you’re seriously missing on a fun way to spice up cards, envelopes, scrapbooking, just about anything…including your sewing machine. Stay with me here. Washi tape is abundantly available in my craft room. So when I read this hack I had to try it.
How to make a Washi Tape Guide for your Sewing Machine:
You take a strip of tape and place it on your sewing machine starting where you want your seam allowance. Use the built in ruler on your machine, and start here. Then press the tape down as you go. This elongates the guide already available on your machine. For me, it helped me stop staring at the presser foot, and to be able to have a much steadier hand when sewing. My seams instantly got straighter, the curves were smoothed out.
In general, I stopped fearing my machine a great deal. This hack was found on Pinterest, but it didn’t link back to a site. You can find the photo/post here.
Here’s how I started using it:
To change my bobbin or clean my machine, I just peel back the top of the tape a bit. Then I’m done, I just smooth it back out again. The washi tape sewing guide really makes a difference in my novice sewing and doesn’t really get in the way all that much. The washi tape also doesn’t leave a residue behind so you are not gunking up your sewing machine at all.
