Trail Hiking Hat Pattern
Learn more about the cable knit Trail Hiking Hat Pattern from Knitting in the Park
The Trail Hiking Hat Pattern is a simple yet fun hat that is easy to knit and lovely to wear. Kick boring beanies to the curb and opt for some flair with the braided cables in this hat. This pattern is designed so that anyone can pick it up and knit the hat, whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to cables.
This is one of my new favorites because it’s a fun take on the traditional cabled hat. You can dress this baby up or dress it down. Because it’s made from acrylic yarn, you don’t have to worry about wearing it too much, or while you work because you can throw it in the washer (on gentle!) and clean it up. The braided cable provides beautiful curved lines that mimic (at least in my mind) the meandering wooded hiking trails of Western Pennsylvania.
This hat uses a combination of a few knitting skills to create a lovely knit hat that is quite warm and looks great on just about everyone! The brim uses a combinations of purling and knitting through the back of the stitch to create a twisted rib of sorts. I think this technique provides a clean edge to the hats as well as provides a bit of structure. The rest of the hat is kit using a braided cable, which means alternating bring stitches to the back or to the front to achieve a braided affect. Its a fun pattern to work as the process is quite mesmerizing.
This hat pattern is designed to use a worsted weight wool or acrylic yarn for warmth and ease of working the pattern. You can use almost any worsted weight yarn, although I would recommend trying to find something on the thicker/heavier side as the hat will be warmer.
