Simple Scrunchies

A simple scrunchie to spice up your look.

A few nights ago, I had the pleasure of eating dinner with my older brother and his family.  My nieces and I started talking about Christmas, and gifts and they busted out their Christmas with lists (complete with prices they had researched on Amazon – I was impressed).  I was so proud of them, as the lists were modest in length and most of what they had asked for was practical and could be used for or worn to school.  There were a few things like bath bombs and velvet scrunchies.

When I got to the velvet scrunchies, I thought, I got this.  I have some great yarn and have seen some pictures of these babies, and it shouldn’t be too hard to whip up some.  Before breaking into a brand new skein of yarn, I decided to use some of what I already had – and loved.  Red Heart Yarn’s Hygge – it’s so soft it’s silky.

To make the Simple Scrunchie, I used Red Heart Yarn’s Hygge, as I had a bit left over from a previous project (the Cozy Cabin Shawl).  You can use a similar weight yarn if you’d like to work through your stash.  Hygge is considered a bulky yarn or number 5 weight.

You’ll also need a crochet hook that is a comfortable size to work with.  I used a US size I (5.5mm)

To make the Simple Scrunchie

Make Slip Knot on your crochet hook.

Chain 3

Wrap chain around your hair tie, from the back around to the front.  Single crochet to close the loop.

Chain 3.

Double Crochet as many times as you can around the hair tie, pulling your stitches together to make room for more as you work.

Close the loop by Single Crocheting into the top of the Chain 3 from beginning of the round.

Chain 1.

Single Crochet into every stitch.  Break yarn. Knot and using a darning needle, weave in the ends.
