Murphy’s Shawl
This one is bittersweet. While I was designing my last pattern, we lost our 13.5 year old labrador Murphy. If you have been around here for any length of time, you have seen photos and video of him. He was my first baby and will always be my soul baby. Murphy always laid right on top of my knitting projects. I wasn’t sure what to call this gradual triangular shaped shawl with cables, but when he passed, I named it Murphy’s Shawl.

Many of my patterns have names that I either am drawn to or from people in my life. This one became especially important for both of us. It got me through that time. When I had finished, a new puppy had entered our lives. Miss Mabel from Memphis. Mabel saw me trying to take pictures of the shawl and came up to me. She sat down, and nudged the shawl. She wanted to try it on. My heart skipped a beat and melted all at once.
This is perfect for my leather cuff for this shawl too. It’s made from an old belt.
About Murphy’s Shawl Pattern:
This is a fun one! Murphy’s Shawl is knit sideways. You increase every couple of rows to create the shape of the shawl. I’ve added cables across the top (or left side as you knit) for a bit of detail. This pattern is fully written out so that you can simple cross rows off as you work. If you get the feel for the rhythm then the pattern is simply a guide.
This means you don’t have to worry about charts or complicated instructions.

What You Need to Knit Murphy’s Shawl
You’ll need a US size 2 knitting needle. I use a circular knitting needle because it feels more comfortable for me. As you get to the wider section of the shawl (the point of the triangle) you may start to feel the weight on straight needles.
For the cables, you’ll also need a size two cable needle or DPN.
You might also like my First Track’s Shawl which also uses fingering weight yarn.
