Introducing Gretchen

The beautiful Gretchen Hat is making it’s debut!

Gretchen, is a sturdy and warm hat that boasts braided cables and knit below’s.  This pattern is knitted using two strands of yarn to make it warmer, making Gretchen a great friend for those brisk morning walks to work, or even walks with your dog.

The name may also have been a bit inspired by Oktoberfest and the name my parents teased my grandmother about for me.  My mother used to tease my grandmother Helen Franz that they couldn’t name me Gretchen, because then people would think that I was all German (and not Irish).

I’ve selected a lovely acrylic blend in a tweed for my version of the double knitted hat, but any medium weight (number 4) yarn should work.

And of course, you’ll need two skeins that are approximately 200-250 yards in length.

I chose Caron Simply Soft Tweeds, which is 250 yards per skein and had plenty for the hat and pompom.

Right now, as we make her introduction, I’m looking for test knitters to help me work through the pattern.

Test knitters:

Test knitters help to make sure the pattern is:

  • as clear as it can possibly be
  • that there are no typos
  • to check the sizing.

Test Knitters also:

  • receive the pattern for free (forever).
  • are invited to test knit additional patterns.
  • work more closely with me to make modifications and new patterns.
  • help name other patterns
  • and more

To be eligible as a test knitter for the Gretchen hat, you must be able to complete the hat in a timely manner (within one week).

If you have questions about becoming a test knitter, or about the Gretchen hat, you can email me or use the contact form below:

Thank you to all of the testers – the call for testers is now closed and the pattern will be available for download shortly!

Hello! Just rec’d your email regarding becoming a ‘test knitter’ so I took some time and looked/read through your site (love Murphy BTW). I would definitely like to become a test knitter for one of your beautiful projects but at this time I am currently knitting socks for my Granddaughter who has moved away to be in school six, SIX provinces away from me (insert sad face here – with tears!!) along with the socks I am completing a poncho for my Sister, a scarf for…me?, maybe; and just finished a hat for my Grandson! Sooo after the Holidays, perhaps?? I really enjoyed your site and look forward to receiving and reading more news from you. Cheers

Carolyn, That is so sweet of you. First, thank you for stopping by and reading the post. Second, thank you so much for the compliments. Third, you sound like you definitely have a knitworthy granddaughter! I hope you get to see them more. I’ll definitely have some more patterns coming between now and after the holidays that will need test knit so don’t fret! Let’s keep in touch!

I’d be happy to test knit for you. I’ve done test knits for several other designers in the past. I’m Sewsweet on Ravelry if you’d like to see samples of my work.
