Headaches Banished! Thanks to Peppermint Oil

Tension, sinus, you name it, I’ve found a new remedy and I’m loving it.

Being pregnant changes a lot of things. Okay, it changes your whole life but who’s counting. The way I treat headaches in my house is definitely one of them. When you’re pregnant the only safe pain reliever is Tylenol and I’ve tried to reduce the amount of times I’ve even reached for that. A friend and DoTerra wellness advocate suggested that I try peppermint oil and my headaches have been banished!

My Journey to Peppermint Oil

Before I was blessed with pregnancy, I started making changes to live a healthier more natural lifestyle. I wanted to reduce what I was bringing into our home, but also be more conscious about it. My husband and I are both ones to seek wholistic approaches to health rather than simply popping another pill (that being said he is a nurse and modern medicine is literally his day job).

I’ve been pregnant for all of cold and flu season. He’s a nurse and exposed to germs daily at the hospital. My friends and family have stopped over, so I’ve definitely been exposed to some bugs. I’ve even caught a few of them. About halfway through, we both came down with a head cold and were getting some pretty significant sinus headaches. I’ve always had issues with my sinuses so when I get them, they knock me down.

Jill, from Hughes Homestead told me that Peppermint oil could not only potentially alleviate the pain, but it could treat the source of the headache. I rushed to my stash of oils from Simply Earth and found my peppermint oil bottle. Applied some, and it was glorious.

How to use Peppermint Oil for Headaches

If you’re new to essential oils there are a few different ways that you can use them. The method people are most familiar with is to use them in a diffuser. Which is great for treating headaches.

Another method is to apply them to the skin. Some oils are mild enough to apply directly to the skin, while others should be used with a “carrier” oil like coconut oil. Peppermint has a cooling or tingling feeling. Some people prefer to use it with a carrier oil, but I can put it directly on my skin and it doesn’t bother me. If you’re going for this method, apply a drop or two to your fingers, and rub the oil onto your chest and temples (like you would with Vick’s or something).

Note here: wait a few minutes before snuggling your pillow if you’ve applied it to your temples. I’ve gotten it near my eye this way causing them to water for a good 15 minutes.

There are some other ways in which you can use/take oils as well but so far, I’ve only personally tried aromatically and topically.
