Typically, I’m not big on Valentine’s Day and the commercialism around it. Why? This day is actually the feast day of Saint Valentine, who was martyred. Yup, it’s a Catholic holiday. Before his execution, Saint Valentine performed a miracle: he cured his jailer’s daughter of blindness and falling in love with her. The two then exchanged notes, which he signed “Your Valentine”.
Above all, I hate the pressure that this new version of the holiday puts on people. People who don’t have a sweetheart get disheartened and lonely. People who do are told to buy roses, even diamonds. Come on now. If your significant other doesn’t know you love him/her by your actions every day – then you have a bigger problem of what to buy them.
