Drawing on Location for Inspiration

My Roots Are in Two Dimensional Art

That’s right! This 3D fiber artist’s roots are in two dimensional art. My degree is in advertising and public relations but I have a minor in art. I really wanted to major in art but my parents really wanted me to pursue something in addition to art just in case. I’m thankful because the blend was what ultimately led me to create this space. I’ve started to dabble in different mediums and create contemporary art and have been drawing on location for inspiration.

What Do I Mean By Drawing on Location?

Before diving into anything too realistic or trying to force something, I started with a few exercises. These exercises are fun, create something visually alluring, and help to retrain my hand, eye, and brain. So I started with line work and moved onto more fluid pieces that were more playful. For the first few pieces I used location, latitude and longitude, to come up with the pattern of symbols. Then I created a matte and guidelines for my canvas. Because my brain likes to play tricks on me, I drew out the lines and symbols in pencil and then went back over them in ink.

Drawing on locations is a play on words to say that I literally drawing out the location of a specific place, over and over again. This creates something really pretty and that creates a conversation. This technique also works to capture dates and moments in time very well.

I’ve done a few of these now and I’ve gotten the process down. In the beginning though, even starting in pencil, I made mistakes. These I covered up in gold ink. Then I added some additional gilding and it just shined. This piece I gifted to a cousin for her new home, the first in their new marriage!

If you like these pieces, I’ve created a link on my etsy to purchase a custom piece for $60. These are perfect for 11 by 14 inch frames that are matted to an 8 by 10. All I need is your address of choice. It can be any address, your home, or a special place. And then I need whether you like the black and white or the gilding!

If you’re not into the art, don’t worry I’ve got more knitting patterns coming! You can get my latest shawl pattern here!
