Crochet Along: Moses Basket
Join this Knitter and Fiber Fumble Along with Me for a Cause
If you have been looking at my patterns, I ask that you save your $4-6 and instead send it to Maria Belinska. I was in search of a tutorial for how to make a Moses Basket for our nursery and Etsy led me to her shop, Yarn Manufaktura. Download her digital pattern, supporting her during this invasion (or another fiber artist from Ukraine). Welcome to the Crochet Along: Moses Basket!
Purchase the pattern here.

Not everyone is expecting or has a little one that would benefit from a moses basket. But these make incredible gifts, and donations to organizations who are supporting new mothers. So you can get crafty and charitable at the same time. While we might not be able to send these overseas at this point, I’d love to find a way to do so in the near future.
Supplies:
The Yarn
Maria has had to suspend physical orders due to the invasion, so I had to find yarn States Side. I found a wonderful Etsy shop in Maspeth, New York called KnitzNPurlz. Maria’s pattern calls for 300-400 meters of yarn that is 7-9 millimeters thick.

100 meters is about 109 yards long. KnitzNPurlz skeins are just that – 109 yards so it’s easy to do the math. Her color options are epic too. The longest part of your order will be deliberating over which colors to get, trust me.
Bottom:
You also need a plywood or wooden bottom for this project. This keeps your baby safe when you pick up and move the basket. KnitzNPurlz offers these but I grabbed mine from BeUniqueChicago because I needed two and they were in stock.
Crochet Hook:
You’ll need a number 9 crochet hook. This isn’t a super tough type of yarn to crochet with so if you don’t readily have this hook in your supplies, you don’t need to go buy a fancy one.
Come Crochet with Me!
I’m really excited about this project. If you’ve never crocheted before, this pattern download features loads of pictures and it’s designed to use very basic stitches/techniques. I hope you’ll share with me the colors you pick, and we can share progress as we work on our Moses Baskets.
Update:
This was a really fun project to work on. I was definitely humbled by crocheting but not by the pattern or the project. Mine turned out a little less sturdy and I think my stitches were a bit too tight. But we still have and use both of the baskets that I made from this project. My daughter uses one them for her baby dolls and stuffies now, which is good because she’s accumulated quite a few.
If you don’t do the visor of the Moses Basket Crochet Pattern then you can use these as baskets around the home as well. Maria also now offers an adorable character basket pattern that you can use with or without the ears to make beautiful storage options.
