The Chevrons Men’s Hat
Get this easy pattern for a cabled hat that is popular for guys
A different take on traditional cables, this simple to knit hat works up quickly and makes a great hat for the guys in your life. I was inspired to come up with the Chevrons Men’s Hat when my then fiancé, now husband, asked me for a knitted hat, that was a little different from the hats I wear.
We often end up matching. Literally we’ll walk out wearing two versions of the same thing, so I can understand his request for something different. And of course, it gave me a reason to dream up a new pattern. I guess you could call me the mad hatter of knitting lately. Something about hats – they’re fun to make, great to gift, whip up quickly vs a larger project. What can I say, I just love hats.
Grab a few circular needles, some DPNs and you are ready to work this simple yet catching beanie. I use DPNs in two ways when I knit hats like these – both for shaping the crown or top of the hat which is the way that they are traditionally used in hats, and for working the cables.
You can buy cable needles in specific sizes and I do have a few, but often it’s easier to reach for a DPN in the size that you are working and go for it. This is especially true if you already have the DPNs. I’m curious – if you’ve worked cables before, what do you prefer? Cable needles or DPNs?

PS, while the Chevrons Men’s hat was designed for the guys in my life, I’d totally wear it and wouldn’t limit it to one gender.
