This is so exciting that I cannot keep this under wraps any longer! I’ve been working on a new Christmas Tree Skirt knitting pattern, this one with a beautiful Celtic cable wrapping around the edge of the tree skirt. I’m currently finishing up my test of this pattern and am sharing some of the details here with you.
Why Knit a Christmas Tree Skirt?
These are one of my favorite seasonal patterns to knit. They just looks so dreamy under the Christmas tree. They’re a joy to knit. If you need a home warming gift or a hostess gift, these tree skirts make fabulous gifts. They knit up quickly, especially when worked with chunky yarn. It’s also a functional way to incorporate your passion, knitting into your home.
That and I am obsessed with Christmas and love making anything and everything, like these ornaments.
Why Did I Design My Own?
When I first sat down with the idea to knit my own Christmas Tree Skirt, I looked through many many patterns. I couldn’t find any that fit what I had in mind. I wanted a lovely detailed border to go around the base of the skirt, and this posed a challenge. How can you carry a cable around the bottom, or across the bottom of a knitted work? The answer was using short rows and knitting the border around the tree skirt.
Now that I had the schematics in my head, it was time to sit down and draft some patterns. First came the Vintage Velvet Tree Skirt. I had the yarn on hand and the grey color fit my home. It was a success! The design worked. If you design patterns, and one of your designs is a success, your mind starts to snowball. In this case, it led to the Snowy White Christmas Tree Skirt, which is the one I currently use.
What’s Different About the Celtic Christmas Tree Skirt
To start with, I’ve knit a bit of a sweater neck on this tree skirt to give it a bit more structure and help cover the base of the faux Christmas tree that I plan to use it with. I’m currently designing this pattern for faux trees, but will include instructions for live trees as well. This includes knitting the project flat verses in the round.
The increases to shape the body of the tree skirt in this pattern are a bit different. It creates the same shape but it makes the tree skirt easier to knit, and hides the increases a bit more.
Lastly, the cable is unique. This year, I’ve increased the complexity of the border portion of the Christmas Tree Skirt and added a multifaceted cable that is beautiful. This Celtic Cable has been around probably since the dawn of knitting, so in and of itself it’s nothing new. But the application of the Celtic Cable in the Christmas Tree Skirt is beautiful.

Jane WHITE
HELP. I have purchased many patterns for a Christmas tree skirt but I just can’t seem to get comfortable with any of them. I bought the Celtic but I don’t know what the finished diameter will be. I love the snowy white but don’t know its size or difficulty. I need 30″ in diameter with the easiest between the two.
Can you help me please?
Maggie
