Caliper Shawl Knitting Pattern

My latest pattern is here and just in time to knit and gift it for the holidays! The Caliper Shawl Knitting Pattern is easy to follow and quick to knit. You can whip up this WIP in just a few days thanks to the chunky yarn. If you pick the same yarn as I did, it also becomes a one skein wonder!

This shawl is similar to yet different from my most popular shawl pattern, the Cozy Cabin Shawl. They are both triangular in shape, however the Caliper Shawl Knitting Pattern is a more gradual or elongated shape. This makes it very wearable as a scarf where the other is more of a wrap. This shawl is also knit sideways rather than top down. The garter ridges in this side ways construction create a beautiful detail.

What You Need to Knit the Shawl:

This pattern calls for a bulky yarn. I’ve used the Lion Brand Yarn Jiffy From the Vault Bonus Bundle. The skein 681 yards and is long enough that you should have some left overs to create tassels if you’d like to add them.

I’ve paired this with a US Size Eight knitting needle, or a 5.0mm. For shawls and heavier projects I recommend using a circular knitting needle. At its’ widest, this shawl is about 19 inches so you can in theory fit it on a longer straight needle. However, with how soft the yarn is and how wonky that can get, circular needles are my favorite way to knit.

While stitch markers aren’t necessary, they definitely help. I used eight of them, two to mark each of the caliper cables. Using these allows you to knit a bit faster without having to count out the stitches as much. In the pattern, I’ve included placement instructions for these. It can also be helpful to use one of the stitch markers to mark the wrong side of the shawl until you begin adding the markers.

Customization:

You can easily customize this shawl from the placement of the caliper cables to the size and shape of the shawl. You could even opt for simple twists instead of the caliper cables. Have fun and please share your projects with me! I’d love to see them as they develop and as a finished work! You can send me a message through the site or email me maggie@knittinginthepark.com.
