I’ve had my eye on the bubble stitch for quite some time now but didn’t know just what I wanted to do with it. Then my cousin announced that she was expecting her first baby girl and inspiration struck. Isn’t it funny how a new baby is always a wonderful muse. It dawned on me that this would be great for a baby blanket, and the Bubble Stitch Baby Blanket was born.

Yarn Needed for the Bubble Stitch Baby Blanket

Yarnspirations make Caron Simply Soft Yarn. It’s perfect for baby blankets. Really it’s perfect for any baby knitting pattern in general. Its machine washable and dryable on gentle settings and its super soft. I use this in many of my patterns so if you’ve downloaded some of my patterns already, you should be pretty familiar with this yarn. If you are new to Knitting in the Park, I think you’ll love it as much has I do.

It is a bit thin for a worsted weight yarn, and the bubble stitch is so structural, I knew I had to do something. I could size down my needle. However, that would make for small bubbles. I wanted these bubbles to be large and hold their shape. Doubling up the yarn was the perfect solution.

Using a US size 8 circular knitting needle and working with two strands, I set out to knit the Bubble Stitch Baby Blanket.

More About the Knitting Pattern

With 12 rows that repeat, beautiful yarn that is really soft, this blanket was so much fun to knit. Knowing how to knit below is a skill that will benefit you in this pattern but you do not need to know how to do it to start. The pattern contains instructions and I’ll walk through them here.

Knitting 4 Below:

Method One:

Step one: Identify the next stitch on your left hand needle. We’ll be counting the stitches below this one so it’s good to know where to start.

Step two: Beginning just below that live stitch, count down four rows.

Step three: Insert your needle into this fourth stitch and knit it.

Second Method:

Step one: Identify the next live stitch on your left hand needle.

Step two: Let this stitch “fall off” of your needle.

Step three: Undo this stitch and the next three so that there are four “yarn ladders” or “bars”

Step four: Insert your needle into the stitch and knit it.
