Bjorn’s Wine Bottle Sweater

A Cozy Cable Knit Gift Accessory

You could say I’m on a bit of a tear with these knitted wine bottle sweaters. If you follow along with me though, you’ll be thanking me this time next month. These little knitted accessories are great to have on hand when you need to bring something along as a gift. Skip the boring tote bag and give them something that will spark some joy, or start a conversation. Gift them one of Bjorn’s Wine Bottle Sweaters.

Who’s Bjorn? And Why Knit His Sweater?

Bjorn’s Hat Pattern is one that I came up with for my little guy. I love the combination of the cable and right twist. It gives the air of sophistication in a knitting pattern that essentially alternates rows. You’ll see what I mean when you get the pattern. If you click over to the hat version of this pattern, you’ll get more on the derivation of the name. We jokingly suggested it once when I was pregnant, along with Gunter, and it stuck around in various ways.

I picked this cable combination for the wine bottle sweater because it’s the right size of cable, with just the right amount of detail. You can really get into a rhythm with this pattern. It’s a series of cabling one stitch to the front or back.

What You Need to Knit Bjorn’s Cable Sweater:

I love Caron Simply Soft yarn so I invariably have it stocked in various colors. It’s a great worsted weight yarn that is soft, and machine washable. When gift giving, I like to give things that are easy to take care of and that hold up. Because not everyone you meet is a yarn snob or has the time to take care of things that are delicate. Plus, this is covering a bottle of wine, it doesn’t have to cost a lot. This is one of those gifts where the thought and application really count.

For needles, you will need US Size 5 double pointed needles for the base. You can choose to knit the whole thing with DPNs, but my fingers get a bit sore in spots because of my tension and so I like to switch to the magic loop. If you follow suit, then get a circular needle in your desired length, US Size 5. Regardless of DPNs or magic loop, you will also need a spare needle or cable needle for the antler cables. Or if you like to live on the wild side, you can opt to cable without the spare needle since it’s only one stitch.

One stitch marker is handy. You’ll want this to be one of the kind that clip or spiral onto your project. If you use one that only slides onto a needle it will continuously fall off of your DPNs as you work.
