Where to Buy Fabric with Joann’s Closing

In a previous post, I shared where you can find the yarn that you knew and loved from Joann Fabrics. I had a few commenters asking about where to buy fabric with Joann’s closing. The list below, while not complete, is a good place to start when looking for fabrics online at affordable prices. Yes, we’d all love to shop at the Mood’s of the world, and that name is getting thrown around quite a lot right now. But there are a lot of other great companies to discover.

So, while Joanns is very sad for so many of us crafters. And with their closing, many will no longer be able to shop for fabric in person locally without driving hours. But there are other options and as you make a few small purchases initially, we will find our staple suppliers again. And hopefully these growing pains allow us to grow and really broaden our experience, finding great new fabrics that we never would have encountered before.

Creative Places to Buy Fabrics with Joann’s Closing

Thrift Shops

While not all thrift shops offer bolts of fabric for you to choose from, they do offer alternatives that can be quite fun and challenging. From bedding and curtains, to dresses with lots of fabric, you can get creative in sourcing the materials for your next project. Heck, Rachel Maksy has made a living out of it!

Estate Sales

While I haven’t been huge on estate sales in the past, I’m definitely starting to appreciate their charm…and their offerings. You might be surprised as to what you can find when someone is de-stashing their loved one’s hobbies. And you are keeping their hopes, dreams, and plan alive by bringing new life to their hoard.

Deadstock Fabrics

The secret is out: the fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters on the planet. Whole reams of fabric will be left by the wayside as trends change. There are some really amazing artists making clothing out of deadstock fabric like Revivall, but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of this material.

Where to Buy Clothing Fabric

Millie and Dot

If you’re making clothing, I love the options from Millie and Dot. They’re durable, soft, and just really high quality. The photos and descriptions are accurate so you can be sure of what you are getting with each order. I personally use their fabrics to make clothing for both my kids and myself.

LBK Printing Co

This shop has darling prints and quality fabrics. I want just about everything they have in stock. They are family owned and offer a range of fabric fibers to choose from. And if you can design it, you can print it with LBK Printing Co.

Etsy

You might know Etsy as a place to buy unique handmade goods, and even patterns (like my knitting patterns!), but they also offer a lot of craft supplies. I’ve ordered minky, courduroy, and even felt from Etsy and have loved every purchase.

SpoonFlower

While it’s a bit more expensive, Spoonflower has loads of options and a wide range of fabric bases to chose from. I’ve ordered from them and would recommend their products. You can even try designing your own fabric prints!

Fabric 4 Fun

A family run business (literally the founder, her daughter, and her father), Fabric 4 Fun is a small but growing operation. Check out their fun selection and let me know what you think! They offer a wide array of fabrics that you can choose from, searching either by the manufacturer, fabric type, or theme! They’re located in North Dakota.

Fabric Guru

This is another one I have not ordered, but I’ll be checking them out for an upcoming upholstery project. Fabric Guru offers everything from outdoor fabrics, to upholstery and drapery, and even cotton prints!

Where to Buy Quilting Fabric

Shabby Fabrics

For quilters and other projects, Shabby Fabrics offers a wide selection at affordable prices. I’ve been following these guys and gals for a while now. Their seasonal offering is quite substantial but they also have loads of options in every color way that you can think of.

Missouri Quilt Co.

Don’t let the name fool you. Missouri Quilt Co. offers a huge online store with just about everything you need to get started with quilting or tackle a complicated project. Think of this, if the entire Joanns was dedicated to quilting instead of being broken up by discipline, this is it!

Fat Quarters Shop

If you like buying bundles then stretch your fingers and get ready to shop. Fat Quarters Shop online store has loads of precut options and offers new selections frequently! You’ll definitely be able to find something from this robust online store.

Where to Buy Specialty Fabrics

Cottoneer

From quilting to specialty children’s fabrics, Cottoneer offers an enormous selection of natural fiber fabrics for you to choose from. Now choosy people can actually have fun choosing!

A Thrifty Notion

From everything from cottons to leathers, A Thrifty Notion has your specialty fabric needs covered. This easy to use website offers what you need with a few simple clicks. Get started on your next project or stock up for a rainy day.

Blue Moon Fabrics

I have not personally ordered from Blue Moon Fabrics, but they look like a good option for costume and clothing fabric supplies. They have operated in California for 25 years, so they aren’t a newcomer to this space and offer an expertise in stretchy fabrics like spandex.

This is by no means and exhaustive list. Have some fun and do some digging of your own. I’m sure you’ll discover loads of awesome new places where you can buy fabric with the closing of Joann’s, and meet loads of exciting new fiber friends! Please let me know if I’ve missed any great recommendations! Together we can build a better list of resources.
